A True Story

Sometimes I need some reassurance from God. Sometimes I feel that God is more hidden than ever, that I am distant, that God is distant from me. I have learned that the best thing for me to do in that case is to go out into the world alone to look. In the Gospels, Jesus often says that we need to have the eyes to see. This is hard to do when you're too busy to look.

So I went out for a good long walk, and I put it out there in my walking prayers that I wanted to feel closer; I wanted to know where God was these days because I was feeling absence instead of presence.

And as I said this out loud, this monarch flew toward me from the woods. It circled around me and lit on this pine tree. And I said, Oh. There you are.
