Friday Music: O Fortuna (misheard)

So, pretty much everybody knows Carl Orff's Carmina Burana, particularly the piece O Fortuna.

I always thought it was about fate and fortune and stuff like that. But it turns out that it's mostly about food and stuff.

Enjoy.

Thursday Birds are Bathing

A pair of sanderlings splish-splashing in the ocean. I love these little guys. Especially when they are cooperating, as here. Sometimes they are pretty mean to each other.

Sort of like people. We are best when we are cooperating.

Happy Thursday!

Nearly Wordless Wednesday: Plaid

Finally, proof that plaid is in fact a color in nature.

(Remember The Spectrum Song sung by Ludwig van Duck on the Wonderful World of Disney when color TV was just coming out? Plaid is a feature in that song.)

A True Story

Sometimes I need some reassurance from God. Sometimes I feel that God is more hidden than ever, that I am distant, that God is distant from me. I have learned that the best thing for me to do in that case is to go out into the world alone to look. In the Gospels, Jesus often says that we need to have the eyes to see. This is hard to do when you're too busy to look.

So I went out for a good long walk, and I put it out there in my walking prayers that I wanted to feel closer; I wanted to know where God was these days because I was feeling absence instead of presence.

And as I said this out loud, this monarch flew toward me from the woods. It circled around me and lit on this pine tree. And I said, Oh. There you are.

Sunday Psalm

Psalm 126

In convertendo

1
When the LORD restored the fortunes of Zion, *
then were we like those who dream.
2
Then was our mouth filled with laughter, *
and our tongue with shouts of joy.
3
Then they said among the nations, *
"The LORD has done great things for them."
4
The LORD has done great things for us, *
and we are glad indeed.
5
Restore our fortunes, O LORD, *
like the watercourses of the Negev.
6
Those who sowed with tears *
will reap with songs of joy.
7
Those who go out weeping, carrying the seed, *
will come again with joy, shouldering their sheaves.

Caturday!

This morning I am having a pajama day while Sally helps me catch up on emails and Bella grows her mane back for the winter.

Happy Saturday/Caturday!

Friday Music: Shadow Blues

My favorite girl band, "I'm with Her" (Sara Watkins on fiddle, Sarah Jarosz on banjo, and Aoife O'Donovan vocals and guitar) played on A Prairie Home Companion last week.  This gorgeous song is Shadow Blues by Colorado singer/songwriter Laura Veirs.

Jarosz and O'Donovan are alumnae of The New England Conservatory. O'Donovan is about to put out a solo album and she also plays with the group Crooked Still. Jarosz plays with her own band and seems to be just about everywhere right now. Watkins is a founding member of Nickel Creek and is currently also playing with The Watkins Family Band.

Happy Friday! Enjoy!

Thursday's Bird is Curious

There are quite a few sparrows that hang out in my back yard. About four or five of them are around almost all the time. Sometimes they perch on the fence, sometimes they are having a splash party in the bird bath. One day two of them were taking a mud bath in a flower pot. In between those activities, they eat a lot of bird seed.

This little guy was curious about what I was doing in its territory last week. I guess I haven't been sitting outside enough!

Wednesday Night Prayers

Be our light in the darkness, O Lord, and in your great mercy
defend us from all perils and dangers of this night; for the
love of your only Son, our Savior Jesus Christ. Amen.

Find the Butterfly

Can you find the clouded sulphur butterfly on this leaf?

Or is the leaf on a clouded sulphur butterfly?

It's Monday! Can't wait till Friday!

What is more beautiful than sunshine on winter weeds gone to seed?

It has been a long time since I've been able to take a walk in the woods. This is a throwback picture from last winter, but I'm counting down until this weekend when I can go off for a long walk on the wild side (aka the national wildlife refuge I love). It takes longer to get there now, which is part of the reason why it's been so long.

But the other reason is because I keep losing my rudder as life gets complicated and busy. I forget that I need to get out and walk. I forget that my work will still be waiting for me when I get back. I forget that my soul dries up if I don't tend to it.

I forget all those things when I get busy - and then I crash.

So the countdown until Friday begins. 5, 4, 3, 2, 1!

Sunday Psalm

    Psalm 104:1-9, 25, 37b

    Benedic, anima mea

    1
Bless the LORD, O my soul; *
O LORD my God, how excellent is your greatness!
you are clothed with majesty and splendor.
    2
You wrap yourself with light as with a cloak *
and spread out the heavens like a curtain.
    3
You lay the beams of your chambers in the waters above; *
    you make the clouds your chariot;
you ride on the wings of the wind.
    4
You make the winds your messengers *
and flames of fire your servants.
    5
You have set the earth upon its foundations, *
so that it never shall move at any time.
    6
You covered it with the Deep as with a mantle; *
the waters stood higher than the mountains.
    7
At your rebuke they fled; *
at the voice of your thunder they hastened away.
    8
They went up into the hills and down to the valleys beneath, *
to the places you had appointed for them.
    9
You set the limits that they should not pass; *
they shall not again cover the earth.

    25
O LORD, how manifold are your works! *
    in wisdom you have made them all;
the earth is full of your creatures.
    37b
    Hallelujah!

Caturday!

Here we are again!

Saturday mornings are for sleeping in! Sally has become a serious lap kitty, especially when it's a bit chilly out.

Bella is a little shy to be back on the internet, however.

We are glad to be back and hope you have a wonderful weekend!
