Nearly Wordless Wednesday: Let's Play!

Copy of the 12th Century Lewis Chess Set
found on the Isle of Lewis (outer Hebrides), Scotland, in the 19th Century.

I think I would have enjoyed playing chess more with these than the ho-hum set I had as a young person.

How fascinating to see the facial expressions and the clothing for these characters.

Happy Wednesday! Have some fun today.

What a fascinating chess set. None of the characters look happy. What is making them all so miserable (especially the Queen)?
Nancy, according to a scholar named J. Robinson who wrote a book about the Lewis Chessmen, the facial expressions are probably meant to be intimidating, even though they look sad to us. Also, the queen is exemplifying a posture of contemplation. News to me, but interesting!
