Friday Afternoon Sports Break

The Winter Olympics start today. So here's a photo from a decidedly un-professional group of skaters. I was living in metropolitan New York and working in Manhattan during the Lake Placid Olympics of 1980, and suddenly everybody decided to take up skating. All the rinks in town were mobbed. And I discovered that I was pretty much not good at ice skating, even if I had been an ace on roller skates (not blades!) back in the day.

Whatever the politics of the Olympics (especially this year) and despite all the silly hype and skewed media coverage, I still love the Winter Olympics.
