Morning Prayer: St. Cuthbert

Almighty God, you called Cuthbert from following the flock to be a shepherd of your people: Mercifully grant that, as he sought in dangerous and remote places those who had erred and strayed from your ways, so we may seek the indifferent and the lost, and lead them back to you; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

Read more about Cuthbert, Bishop of Lindisfarne, here.  This article doesn't mention the further stories about Cuthbert after his death, how faithful monks dug up his body when Viking raiders threatened Lindisfarne. He was taken to a cave and then to Durham, where his relics and some of his personal effects are kept in the Cathedral. I saw those relics and felt a deep connection to the Church (at a time when I wasn't so connected) that led me to become an Episcopalian. So Cuthbert occupies a special place in my heart.
