Morning Collect: Hildegard, Abbess and Mystic




God of all times and seasons: Give us grace that we, after the example of your servant Hildegard, may both know and make known the joy and jubilation of being part of your creation, and show forth your glory not only with our lips but in our lives; through Jesus Christ our Savior, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

Hildegard von Bingen was a remarkable person for any age. Because the Pope sanctioned her visions, she was allowed to speak publicly, before the Papacy eventually decided that women really had nothing important to say. Her music is interesting to listen to -- she wrote a lot of it. The German filmmaker, Margarethe von Trotta, has made an interesting reverential biopic of Bingen's life called "Vision" (and it's available on Netflix streaming).

By the way, thanks for adding the links in your blog to the biographical information when, like today, the Morning Collect refers to a person from the Church Calendar. They are such interesting people.

Yesterday, NPR's "With Heart and Voice" featured some music inspired by Hildegard of Bingen. There was one quote that I had to stop what I was doing to write it down: "How wondrous is the breath of inspiration by which humanity was awakened."

Thanks, Bill - Hildegard really was remarkable. I love the music that she wrote as well (See Charles' comment beow). And yes, I don't know why I didn't think before to link to the bios of the saints. Glad that's working for you!

Thanks, Charles! That's a great quote. I do love Hildegard's music - those soaring fifths are distinctive and beautiful.
