Indeed, a lovely carol, and sung here by one of the finest choirs in the world. According to Wikipedia (By What Authority Speaketh Wikipedia??), the words of the carol were first published in 1682 by Luke Wadding, an Irish bishop. The current form of the words and tune of the carol are due to Ralph Vaughan Williams, who heard the carol sung in 1919 near Horsham, Sussex, hence the carol's name.
Well, I have to admit I occasionally look stuff up on Wikipedia, too, but I didn't know the connection with Vaughn Williams, who is a favorite of mine. Thanks for enlightening us!
