Or perhaps doing the "downward dog" yoga pose? I enlarged the photo a bit.... these little birds shove their bills into the sand to get at the tiny crustaceans hiding under there. They're cute little fellas - and this particular kind is an endangered species. They lay their eggs right on the sand, where they are vulnerable to all sorts of predators and human activities. Certain beaches where they nest are closed during the nesting season.
